LIGHT FOR THE LIVING

Prelude Folktale

“The Visitor of Peace and the Two Villagers of Umuonyima”

My beloved in Christ,

Let us warm our hearts with a small folktale from Umuonyima village in Mbaitolu, where the Harmattan breeze can dry your lips faster than you can say “Okwu ọma.”

One early morning, news broke that a Great Visitor—sent by God Himself—was coming to the village. They said He was a man of justice and peace, who sees beyond what the eyes can see. They even added that once He enters a home, quarrel escapes through the window, and blessings jump in through the door.

The town crier went around—
“Kwarà! Kwarà! Kwarà! Everybody, prepare your compounds! Sweep your hearts! The Great Visitor is near!”

Now, let us look at the humour hidden in human behaviour.

Mama Nkiru: The Woman of Preparation

Mama Nkiru, a widow known for her loud voice and soft heart, immediately picked her broom and began sweeping with the energy of ten people.

As she swept, she shouted at imaginary cobwebs:
“If the Visitor enters here, He must not bend His head for cobweb! Tufia!”

She even reconciled with her neighbour, Mama Uzoamaka, whom she had vowed never to greet again because of a quarrel involving one stubborn goat and two stolen garden eggs.

But Mazi Arinze… O di egwu!

Meanwhile, Mazi Arinze, the village’s self-appointed philosopher, sat outside his hut sipping palm wine from last night.

He waved off the town crier with one hand and said:
“Leave that thing. If He wants to come, let Him come. My compound is okay the way it is.”

But truth be told, the compound looked like Eke Ukwu market after rain—full of leaves, broken calabashes, and one confused-looking chicken that did not seem to know who owned it.

The Day Came

The Great Visitor walked through Umuonyima:

  • In homes where people had prepared, He brought peace.

  • In places where people apologised, He restored joy.

  • Where hearts were ready, blessings stayed.

  • Where hearts were stubborn, He simply walked past—quietly, gently.

He entered Mama Nkiru’s home and filled it with peace like early morning sunshine.

When He reached Arinze’s compound, the confused chicken started running around as if to warn him—but it was too late. The Visitor simply walked past. No drama. No announcement. No blessing.

Mazi Arinze later heard how others had been visited and blessed.
He scratched his head and muttered:
“So blessing came to my door and I carried palm wine instead of preparation? Chai!”

And so, the elders of Umuonyima formed a proverb:

“Grace visits every village—but only the prepared receive it.”

THE SCRIPTURES OPEN THE MEANING

FIRST READING — ISAIAH 11:1–10

Like the Great Visitor of Umuonyima, Isaiah speaks of a Spirit-filled King who will judge with righteousness, restore justice, and bring harmony even between wolf and lamb—
The Messiah who brings true peace.

SECOND READING — ROMANS 15:4–9

St. Paul calls us to unity, endurance, harmony, and hope.
In short:
Prepare your heart so the peace of Christ may dwell richly within you.

GOSPEL — MATTHEW 3:1–12

John the Baptist is the real town crier of the Kingdom, shouting:

“Prepare the way of the Lord! Make His paths straight!”

Even the Pharisees and Sadducees came—surprising John!
But he warned them:
Repentance must be sincere.
Preparation must come from the heart.

REFLECTION (Rev. Fr. C. P. Ibearugbulem, C.S.Sp.)

My beloved, today the Church gives us the same urgent message:
Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

A kingdom of justice, righteousness, peace, and harmony is unfolding. Only those who prepare themselves—like Mama Nkiru—will be part of it. The call of John the Baptist is clear:
Rise, prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths, and open your heart to the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

May God bless you this Advent.
Happy Sunday.

— Fr. Chinedu Ibearugbulem, C.S.Sp.
