The Day Money Lost Its Value

💡 The Day Money Lost Its Value 💸

             By Light for the Living

Once upon a time, not too long ago...

A man walked into the market with ₦10,000 in his wallet,

and confidence in his pocket.

By the time he walked out,

he carried one nylon bag — and one confused face. 😕

He counted his money again.

The numbers were the same...

but the value had vanished.

That, my friends,

is what they call currency devaluation. 💔

These days, the market feels like a place of miracles —

but not the good kind.

Bread now performs disappearing acts before your eyes. 🍞✨

Tomatoes have become celebrities. 🍅

And beans — that humble friend of the common man —

now demands to be called “Your Excellency.” 😂

Ask any trader why everything is expensive,

and you’ll hear the same anthem:

“Dollar don rise!”

But here’s the funny thing —

most of us don’t earn in dollars!

We think in naira, earn in naira,

and pray in naira...

yet somehow our destiny depends on Washington. 🌍

Devaluation is that polite thief.

It doesn’t come with a gun.

It comes with a smile —

and a document stamped “Approved by the World Bank.”

It whispers,

“Don’t worry, it’s good for the economy.”

Then, like magic —

your salary shrinks,

your savings vanish,

and your dreams develop holes. 💸

Our leaders clap,

foreign experts nod,

while the poor man’s stew becomes a theory in economics. 🍲📉

Dear leaders,

you can’t outsource common sense!

Every time we swallow foreign advice

— line, hook, and sinker —

we end up being the fish. 🐟

Yes, borrow wisdom — but not without thinking.

Yes, seek partnership — but not without pride.

Because a policy that shines in Geneva

can explode in Abuja

if it forgets the faces it affects. 💭

A nation’s value isn’t in its dollars,

but in the honesty of its labour,

the integrity of its leaders,

and the dignity of its citizens. 🇳🇬

You can devalue a currency...

but never devalue your people.

You can lose money...

but don’t lose conscience.

The day money lost its value

was not when the naira fell —

it was when we stopped believing in ourselves.

We abandoned our farms for oil,

our factories for imports,

our ideas for aid.

But it’s not too late. 🙏🏾

Every great nation rose

when its people decided to value what truly matters —

integrity, productivity, and unity of purpose.

So rise, Africa.

Rise, Nigeria.

Not by begging for loans,

but by believing in your worth. ✊🏾

Because, as one wise trader said:

“When you let strangers price your goods for you,

don’t be surprised when they sell your soul at a discount.”
